OUCH! OUCH! OUCH! That’s what I remember from my experience with the Ronco Hair Trimmer. I couldn’t find a photo of the original Ronco brand hair trimmer, but this Sabo brand trimmer shown below, looks virtually identical to it.
I’m assuming that my mom saw the same black & white TV commercial that I remember from the ’60s. It was of a mother trimming her son’s hair using the Ronco Hair Trimmer. My mom probably saw the commercial and thought, hey, this is a quick and easy way to cut my hair without having to drive me to the barber shop and pay for a haircut. What I saw in the commercial was a mother trimming her son’s hair and you could see the pained expression on the boys face as the razor pulled on his dry hair. I compare the pain to shaving a beard dry, and using a worn out old razor.
Eventually, after all my cringing and fidgeting while getting my hair trimmed, I guess my folks decided to take me to a barber shop instead. I can’t say that the barber was much better, because one time, he cut my ear with his electric clippers and I was bleeding pretty badly. OUCH, OUCH, OUCH!!!
1974 Commercial for the Hair Wiz hair trimmer. Again, I couldn’t find a video for the Ronco brand from back in the ’60s, but this one was similar:
